U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe, (R-ME), delivered a powerful farewell speech on the Senate floor. After 34 years in Congress, including three terms in the Senate, Snowe is ready to focus on other projects.

With her staff on the Senate floor and her husband watching from the gallery the Senator said that she remains hopeful that the Senate can overcome ‘excessive political polarization.’

Even though Snowe is leaving Senate, she said she wants to work from outside to encourage ‘bipartisanship and consensus, adhering to the founding precepts of compromise and conciliation over partisanship and division.’

Snowe, who was orphaned at age 9, is the third-longest-serving woman in congressional history. She thanked the people of Maine for their support during her tenure.
