A Florida man and woman were seriously injured when their motorcycle struck a moose late Monday afternoon on U.S. Route 2 in southern Aroostook County.

Maine State Police responded to the crash in North Yarmouth Academy Grant Township around 5:30 p.m., according to Trooper Jared Sylvia.

The investigation revealed that 56-year-old Paul Duel and his passenger, 47-year-old Lisa Ann Lotti, both of Eustis, Florida were traveling south on a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle when a moose ran into the road in front of them. The motorcycle struck the moose and skidded on its side into the northbound lane, Sylvia said.

Duel and Lotti were transported by Mattawamkeag Ambulance to the Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln before being transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Both were being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Trooper Jared Sylvia and Trooper Toral Nelson investigated the crash. Also assisting at the scene were members of the Reed Plantation Fire Dept., Maine DOT and employees of Cianbro Corp.
