The turkey hunt began on Saturday and lasts until Nov. 7. Most hunters are limited to either one or two turkeys depending on what part of the state they hunt in. The hunt is closed in parts of far northern Maine.

Saturday was also the first day of the year for several bird and small game hunting seasons. They include ruffed grouse, bobwhite quail, pheasant, snowshoe hare, raccoon and gray squirrel.

Saturday was also the last day of the first stretch of the state's moose hunt. The hunt resumes on Oct. 10.
