Tracadie RCMP responded to the complaint shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday. Sgt. Marc Beaupré said a child under the age of 14 who was riding a bike was allegedly approached by a man and taken to a nearby residence. The child was able to get away and was not injured.

A 71-year-old Tracadie man was arrested a short time later. He appeared in Tracadie Provincial Court on Wednesday, and was charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of assault.  The man was returned to court Thursday afternoon and was additionally charged with abduction of a person under the age of 14 and forcible confinement.

The man's name is subject to a court-imposed publication ban to protect the identity of the victim. He remains in custody, and is scheduled to return to court on Monday, September 19.
