A joint investigation involving the Department of Justice and Public Safety, the RCMP and the Edmundston and Grand Falls police on Saturday evening led to the seizure of 153,000 contraband cigarettes, worth $39,000 on the black market.

A vehicle and money were also seized after the traffic stop in Saint-Jacques, just north of Edmundston. Police simultaneously executed three search warrants in Grand Falls, Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska and New Denmark. The three suspects are to appear in Edmundston Provincial Court at a later date.

Police have said that the trafficking of contraband cigarettes in the region has often been linked to organized crime.
