New Doctor Who star Pearl Mackie will take on a much bigger role than The Doctor’s newest companion, or our introduction to Peter Capaldi’s replacement. As revealed in a new Season 10 preview, “Bill” will become the first full-time companion identified as openly gay.
Doctor Who will reach a major turning point over the course of 2017, first saying goodbye to showrunner Steven Moffat in Season 10, and then Peter Capaldi himself in this year’s Christmas special. We won’t know the name of this replacement for some time, but U.K. oddsmakers are already placing strong bets on James Bond star Ben Whishaw, if Season 11 doesn’t opt for a major change.
It was only yesterday we read the writing on the TARDIS to learn that Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi would leave the series behind in 2017, and The BBC is already marking the beginning of the end. Season 10 has an official April premiere date, along with the U.S. debut of young adult spinoff Class.
The built-in turnover of Doctor Who keeps the Regeneration rumor mill in perpetual motion, and it seems Peter Capaldi is finally turning that wheel. The BBC confirms Capaldi will exit the role in 2017, kicking off the search for a 13th (technically 14th) Doctor.
You didn’t think Doctor Who would get through the 2016 Christmas special without a fresh trailer for 2017, did you? Prepare for Season 10 and a new companion, as the new trailer introduces The Doctor through the eyes of Pearl Mackie’s Bill, and boy are there a lot of questions.
Doctor Who fans have enjoyed Matt Lucas’ bumbling Nardole since his introduction in last year’s Christmas special, so much so that the character was brought back for this month’s “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” and beyond into Season 10. Now, reports confirm Lucas’ character will be “stuck with” The Doctor for awhile as a defacto companion of sorts.
Even if Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi doesn’t end up staying beyond the tenth season next year, we still have some super days ahead. Case in point, The Doctor is coming to New York and meeting a genuine superhero in the first official trailer for Christmas Special “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
Peter Capaldi has stuck with Doctor Who for upwards of two seasons, but with Steven Moffat announced to leave after Season 10 next year, the question remains if the Twelfth Doctor goes with him. As of the 2016 Christmas special, even Capaldi admits he hasn’t yet made a decision whether to remain beyond the tenth season.
We’ve yet to see a formal trailer for Doctor Who 2016 Christmas special “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” but the sheer volume of fresh photos might just make up for it. Meet the mysterious “Ghost” in, and out of costume, as The Doctor and Nardole undertake a new Manhattan adventure complete with babies and creepy surgeons.
