A powerful snowstorm sweeping over the northeastern U.S. on the first day of spring is expected to sideswipe Maine and New Brunswick on Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Washington and Hancock Counties with 7 to 12 inches of snow possible. The area includes Bar Harbor, Danforth, Machias and Eastport.

A Winter Weather Advisory is posted in southern Aroostook County, where snowfall could total 3 to 7 inches by late Monday evening, Northern areas of the County might receive only 1 to 4 inches, forecasters say.

On the New Brunswick side, a Snowfall Warning extends from St. Stephen to Saint John where 15-20 centimetres of snow is expected to be accompanied by strong winds.
