The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and freezing rain across Aroostook  and northern Penobscot Counties from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say snow will develop Tuesday evening and gradually change to a mix of rain and freezing rain overnight. Wet snow will likely accumulate 1 to 4 inches along with a trace of ice. Winds will be picking up as well, with gusts up to 35 mph overnight and through the morning.

Rain early Wednesday morning is expected to freeze upon contact with cold ground surfaces. This could create very slippery road  conditions, especially on less traveled rural roads, forecasters say.

The rain should taper off Wednesday afternoon with high temperatures approaching 40°F.  Another round of rain is likely on Thursday with highs in the upper 30s.
