It was established last week that we may all have to do quite a bit of waiting before we get a peek at James Cameron’s many Avatar sequels. Who’d have guessed that the best thing to tide us over until then would be the latest film featuring the Smurfs? The latest trailer for Smurfs: The Lost Village looks rather familiar, as a search party goes on an expedition to a land filled with bioluminescent wildlife, weird and mighty beasts, and peaceable blue-skinned natives. As one Smurf so elegantly puts it, “It‘s like a workout for your eyes!” Indeed, those viewers looking for a lush vision of a hidden world may be in luck.

The latest trailer for The Lost Village lays out the plot of the film pretty clearly: All’s well in the Smurf Village, with their Smurf mushroom huts and Smurf psychotherapy. (Which raises a lot of questions — do Smurfs study Freud? Wouldn’t that then imply some expression of sexuality in the Smurfs, contradicting the assertion in Donnie Darko that Smurfs have no genitals and reproduce asexually? Why has academia failed to address these issues?) Feeling restless, a gang of four Smurf pals voiced by Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, and Danny Pudi defy the orders of Papa Smurf (Mandy Patinkin) and set off on a grand adventure beyond the safe boundaries of Smurf Village. They eventually locate the once-thought-mythical Lost Village and befriend the colony of Smurfs led by Smurfwillow (Julia Roberts) that lives there, eventually joining forces to battle Gargamel (Rainn Wilson).

The glasses-on-butt gag is a bit of a groaner, but overall, this looks like a harmless way to keep your youngster busy for 90-or-so minutes. Or, judging by the Avatar vibes, begin your mushroom trip.
