Portland's local law change to raise the age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products goes into effect on Wednesday. City officials are reminding merchants of the new rules as well as the fact that they also apply to electronic cigarettes.

Merchants also have to post a notification to customers about the ban on sales to people who are under 21 years of age.

The City Council voted to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 on June 20.
