34-year-old April LaPlante of Van Buren has been charged with operating under the influence following an accident Wednesday night.

Just before 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a report of a vehicle off the road on US Route 1 in Cyr Plantation.

Deputy Sheriff Chad Foley says Lapointe had been driving south in her 2011 Ford Fusion when she crossed the oncoming lane, rode on top of a snowbank for about 200 feet, went over the embankment and came to rest in a shallow stream just north of the LaPlante Road intersection.

Deputy Foley says Lapointe was alone in the vehicle and was not injured. Subsequent investigation led to LaPointe's arrest Friday for operating under the influence.

Alcohol is considered a major contributing factor in the crash. Her first court appearance is scheduled for April 6, 2016, in Madawaska.

Lapointe’s car sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage and was towed from the scene of the crash.

Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall says there were no passengers in the vehicle and there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.  Crandall says the accident had the potential to be much worse.
