Selena Gomez has reportedly extended a supportive shoulder to Demi Lovato and the singer's family after Lovato was hospitalized earlier this week for a reported drug overdose.

Gomez, whose connection to Lovato has waned over the years, has still never stopped loving her friend of many years, a source told E! News. And even if the pop stars aren't in a great place at the moment, they've always supported each other in times of crisis.

"When Selena found out the news about Demi, she was very upset and emotional," the source saidbut noted the ladies "haven't been close friends in a while now." Still, the source said: "they always shared a special bond and they still have love for one another."

"Selena has reached out to Demi's family members to share her love and prayers, and she is really distraught about her health," the source added. "She hates that Demi has been suffering."

Gomez's mother Mandy Teefey more explicitly reached out to Lovato with an Instagram post after the singer's relapse.

"This was exactly 10 yrs ago at S, Sweet 16. @ddlovato we love you. The world is a better place because of these infectious smiles. My heart hurts," she wrote with an image of Lovato and Gomez smiling together.

Lovato's family thanked fans for their support in a statement released Tuesday (July 24) but asked them to avoid speculating what, exactly, landed Lovato in the hospital.

"Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support. Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy and not speculation as her health and recovery is the most important thing right now," the statement read.
