Selena Gomez on What She Learned About Herself During Hiatus
Selena Gomez acknowledged the hiatus she'd taken away from the limelight in her 2016 American Music Awards acceptance speech, and now she's provided some insight into the routines that have kept her balanced on a daily basis.
In response to a questionnaire for Thrive Global, a site founded by Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Selena provided responses that touched on her "90 days off," as she put it, which she first announced in August.
In response to the question, "Tell us about your relationship with your phone," the "Good For You" singer said, "I recently took 90 days off. During that time I did not have my cellphone. It was the most refreshing, calming, rejuvenating feeling. Now I rarely pick up my phone, and only limited people have access to me." She said she doesn't do email, either (which must be amazing).
Gomez says she last felt burned out "three months ago, before I took a hiatus to take care of myself," and that when she wakes up in the morning her ritual is "drink water, stretch, and take a deep breath."
She's also a fan of "self affirmations," which makes sense, except that Selena's reply to what she'd do with 15 suddenly-free minutes was "Self-affirmations in cooking or napping!" How does one self-affirm while sleeping? Show us the way, Selena!
While accepting her AMA for Favorite Pop/Rock Artist on November 20, Gomez took the opportunity to open up.
"I had to stop, because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down."
"I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what's in here," she continued. "I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love."
Prior to her break, Gomez stated that she was experiencing "anxiety, panic attacks and depression as side effects of lupus.
