The Salvation Army kick-started their annual red kettle campaign on Monday, Nov. 5, with an official ceremony at the state capital.

The annual red kettle campaign raises funds to support families in need during the holiday season. Last year the Salvation Army raised enough to help out 58,000 families across Maine.

Salvation Army volunteers can be seen ringing bells next to red kettles at malls, grocery stores, and various other locations.

The red kettle campaign has been helping families around the world since 1891. The campaign started in San Francisco and every year since then the campaign has grown bigger and bigger.

Today, the Salvation Army even has an ‘Online Red Kettle’ campaign where you get your own individual red kettle and you can invite friends to donate to that kettle.

The red kettle campaign is running from November until Christmas Eve.
