Robert De Niro is the latest member of Hollywood elite to lend his public support to Meryl Streep, after the three-time Oscar winner delivered an eloquent, measured speech against Donald Trump during the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.

The Goodfellas actor wrote a letter to Streep shortly after the awards show, praising her "elegance and intelligence," while also co-signing the Sophie's Choice actress's overarching message against bullying.

From PEOPLE:

Meryl –

What you said was great. It needed to be said, and you said it beautifully. I have so much respect for you that you did it while the world was celebrating your achievements. I share your sentiments about punks and bullies. Enough is enough. You, with your elegance and intelligence, have a powerful voice – one that inspires others to speak up as they should so their voices will be heard too. It is so important that we ALL speak up.

We love you.

Bob

Streep's speech -- which several celebrities have lauded in the hours and days immediately following its delivery -- called largely for acceptance, pointing out the many foreigners and outsiders who make up Hollywood. She also implored the public and the press to hold those in power accountable for their actions.

"Disrespect invites disrespect," she said, "violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose."

Trump responded to Streep's speech on Twitter -- as is his way -- referring to her as "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood." But as recently as 2015, Trump named the Devil Wears Prada actress as one of his favorite stars.

When asked to name his most beloved actors, Trump told The Hollywood Reporter, “Meryl Streep is excellent; she’s a fine person, too.”
