An Old Town man who took his stepdaughter out of state without her mother's knowledge won't face criminal charges in Maine, according to a report from a local television station.

WABI is reporting that Old Town Police have closed the case against Christopher Julian, 44. Police told the station that the victim has decided not to pursue charges.

Police said Julian picked up his 15-year-old stepdaughter Natalee Cote at her school on Sept. 12 and drove her to the Royal Crest Motor Inn in Hampton, N.H. Police said he turned off both his and Cote's cell phone to prevent her from calling home.

Cote's mother contacted police, which launched a manhunt for the pair. Police said at the time they believed the girl could be in danger.

An employee at the hotel recognized the pair and alerted police.

Julian told reporters outside the police station that the situation was "a misunderstanding."
