Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Reveals Relationship ‘Disaster’ Inspired New Album
Red Hot Chili Peppers will grace us with a new album, The Getaway, come June 17. In a new interview, vocalist Anthony Kiedis revealed roughly half of the album’s material was inspired by a “disaster” of a relationship with young model Helena Vestergaard.
Red Hot Chili Peppers spent much of 2015 writing new songs for The Getaway, shortly after Kiedis’ relationship with Vestergaard came to an end in late 2014. During an interview with BBC Radio, Kiedis opened up about how the relationship inspired his newest lyrics.
“Lyrically, I’m embarrassed to say, but a two-year relationship that completely fell apart like a nuclear bomb just left me feeling pretty raw and available to the emotional universe for writing,” Kiedis said. “So even though the relationship was a bit of a disaster, I feel that in some way I did get something out of it, which was about half the songs on this record.”
The singer continued about the songs, “They’re not full literal stories, because I find that a bit boring for me, personally, at this stage, writing something that’s predictable; ‘Oh, well everyone can relate to that.’ I’d rather sort of disguise it in color and shape and just make it come out a bit more open to interpretation. That excites me more as a lyricist than being overly literal.”
As for the rest of the album, Kiedis shared, “Lyrically, it just comes from love of life and love of life’s tragedies and successes and hurts and triumphs and the psychedelic mystery of nature.”
