What's it like to ride out a powerful hurricane while staying at a beautiful luxury resort? A Maine couple did just that. Toby and Leslie McAllister had their honeymoon planned months in advance and didn't anticipate the volatile hurricane season. The two boarded a plane and landed in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic despite Hurricane Maria's pending arrival.

Now that he's on the other side, Toby McAllister sent us a quick note on their experience at the resort during the storm.

We woke up Thursday morning and got notified that Hurricane Maria was heading straight for Punta Cana. We've been enjoying the beautiful weather all week at Breathless Resort, so it was a bit scary! They made us pack a small bag with our passports and any valuables, and we had to be at the shelter by 3 p.m. that day. Luckily the place was massive and had a constant rotating buffet, plenty of cola and water, but no booze allowed in hurricane shelters apparently. I snuck a bit of Jameson in anyway.

Everyone got a beach chair to sleep on. They played movies all night and even had a few dance parties. The staff here rocks. There were ping pong tournaments and free massages as well!

The wind was at 110mph overnight and the storm surge was 7 feet. The beach is completely gone, and waves were crashing into the second story of the hotel! We were allowed back into our rooms at 5 p.m. the next day, with back up generators powering the entire resort.

Overall, it was one hell of an experience, and a honeymoon my wife and I will not soon forget. Now we're hitting the bar and booking the next flight we can back to Maine. It could be days!
