Lots of folks will be taking to the highways ahead of the long holiday weekend, and police will be out in force ensuring that people are driving responsibly.

With the increased traffic of end of summer vacations and students traveling to get ready for school, RCMP will be vigilant by increasing patrols and setting up check stops in various locations all over the province.

Sgt. André Pépin of the New Brunswick RCMP's Traffic Services Unit said "Two common offenses we will be focusing on this weekend are dangerous driving and impaired driving. Despite our best efforts over the years to educate the public about the dangers and consequences surrounding these offences, we are still catching people driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and driving dangerously."

So far in 2014, the RCMP in New Brunswick have laid 523 charges related to impaired driving offenses and 105 charges related to dangerous driving offenses.

Police are asking for the public's help to get impaired drivers and dangerous drivers off the road. If you are on the road and suspect a person is driving while impaired or driving dangerously, please call 911 immediately.
