So far this year, statistics show that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in 20 of the 55 fatal crashes on roads patrolled by the RCMP in New Brunswick. Those crashes resulted in 60 deaths.

"Every driver can make the choice not to drive while impaired," says S/Sgt. Gilles Blinn with the RCMP in New Brunswick. "National Impaired Enforcement Day is an opportunity for police to interact with drivers during check stops and remind them that driving while impaired can result in a crash that seriously injures or kills someone, including them."

On Saturday, RCMP across New Brunswick will be setting up check stops throughout the day. Officers will be checking for impaired drivers but also making sure that vehicle registration, safety inspection and insurance are all up-to-date.

On the weekend of November 12 and 13 in Moncton, Codiac Regional RCMP arrested seven people for impaired driving. All were detected during traffic check stops.

The RCMP is reminding drivers of the options that are available if they have had too much drink; take a cab, have a designated driver, call Operation Red Nose or take public transit or make arrangements to stay the night at the event.

Throughout the month of December the RCMP in New Brunswick will be using social media to remind motorists and passengers alike of the importance of driving sober.
