An RCMP spokesman said 24-year-old Justin Bourque was arrested shortly after midnight Friday  in a resident's backyard in the same area of the city where the shooting occurred. He was not armed but police say they found weapons nearby. No shots were fired.

Roughly 300 police officers were involved in the manhunt.  Bourque is being held at the RCMP detachment in Sackville.

Shortly after the arrest, Moncton residents who had been under lock-down for nearly 30 hours, were told it was safe to leave their homes and move about freely. City services, including buses, resumed on Friday in the southeastern New Brunswick city of 70,000 people. Schools remained closed, however.

The RCMP identified the shooting victims as RCMP Constable David Ross, 32, from Quebec, Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, 45, originally from France and Douglas James Larche, 40, of Saint John, N.B.

One of the wounded officers has been released from hospital, and the other is said to be recovering.
