Forecasters say there is the potential for a few inches of snow in central and northern parts of the state late Thursday night and early Friday morning. Precipitation will start in the Downeast region as rain around midnight, and turn to snow before dawn as it reaches northern areas.

Forecasters say the snow should change back to rain by midday Friday but possibly remain snow over the far north. Preliminary snow amounts range from 1 to 3 inches across northern Maine to 3 to 5 inches over the central highlands.

Last year, the first measurable snow fell of November 23, with 2.6 inches recorded at Caribou.
