A new trailer for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot dropped today (May 18), and it's a vast improvement on the first one. An overall tighter and better-paced edit, it also showcases the talent of its cast, featuring more footage of costars including Chris Hemsworth and SNL's Cecily Strong. But will a warm reception from those who enjoy it be nearly as loud as its unprecedentedly-vocal naysayers?

The trailer drops the day after a reviewer at a film site called Cinemassacre was alternately roasted and celebrated for a video post in which critic James Rolfe announced he "refused" to review it. Given the site's previous history of reviewing other remakes and reboots, it's interesting that Rolfe picked a female-fronted reboot that's managed to incite rage and fear from often otherwise-rational men as the one that made him finally say "enough!"(?) As a writer, when something deeply bothers me, I try and do an unflinching self-audit on why it does — and it's not usually the surface reason I wanted to point to. Why you really so mad, bruh?

Even those who are excited about the franchises' latest installment starring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig had cause for mild disappointment upon seeing the first teaser, which appeared to mostly rehash the jokes from Ivan Reitman's celebrated original. But being personally less-than-stoked about the project is one thing; the record-setting vitriol it's provoked from the critics who hate its very existence is quite another. Though McCarthy (diplomatically) admitted that trailer #1 was "confusing," our sister site ScreenCrush pointed out that there's something fishy about its current status as the most-disliked trailer in YouTube history. In addition to a comments section full of ugly, misogynistic remarks about the stars' appearances and women's ability to be funny, the number of dislikes far surpassed other recent critical and commercial failures:

The Ghostbusters trailer currently has 507,610 dislikes on YouTube. To put that in perspective, the Fantastic Four trailer from last year has only 20,175 dislikes. The Ridiculous Six trailer, which has an impressive 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, has only 5,803 dislikes. Could Ghostbusters be that much worse than either of those two movies?

On a personal level, I've also been stunned to repeatedly hear my own fandom of the 1984 original dismissed by otherwise very nice men (it is always men) who've tried to explain to me that I "don't understand" because they are "huge nerds" about the beloved franchise. Thus they reserve the final word on the new unreleased film's worthlessness, regardless of the fact that I:

  1. Am paid to review movies
  2. Rented the original Ghostbusters so many times I recited Stantz's and Janine's lines and my father eventually refused re-rentals because "it was a waste of money"
  3. Watched The Real Ghostbusters cartoon religiously, despite knowing in my soul that it wasn't very good
  4. Played the original Ghostbusters video game on Sega Master System (YUP) and loading my ghost-busting vehicle up with weapons was the closest I've ever come to wanting a car

Despite the above qualifications which I apparently need to furnish to prove my fan status, my hope for the project has been unilaterally interpreted as some feminist rallying cry as opposed to just wanting to watch a great new Ghostbusters installment, which THE 1989 SEQUEL WAS NOT, SO TAKE OFF YOUR AMBER-HUED NOSTALGIA GLASSES AND LOOK AROUND LIKE AN ADULT.
