Crime Stoppers and the Financial and Consumer Services Commission (FCNB) are seeking the public's help to identify potential Ponzi schemes operating in New Brunswick communities.

This type of scam has been responsible for the majority of investor losses in cases investigated by the FCNB.

The most common type of Ponzi scheme is where someone raises significant amounts of money by offering a high rate of interest to other individuals in the community. Often the interest rate offered is 10% per year or more, and the person raising the funds will provide a promissory note or loan agreement in exchange for the money. Sometimes the person borrowing the money will do so directly, or they may employ representatives to offer the investment to a wider circle. Ponzi schemes usually involve people who know each other.

If you know of someone raising significant amounts of money by offering excessive interest rates, and you'd like to report your concerns but wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIP212 + your message to 'CRIMES' (274637), or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest.
