Watch the National Play a New Song With St. Vincent
It's been a while since we've gotten a new album from the National -- Trouble Will Find Me came out in 2013 -- but at least they haven't been stagnant. Last night (July 28) at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, they played a new song, “Prom Song 13th Century (Frankie & Johnny),” and brought out St. Vincent (Annie Clark) to sing with them.
"Here we go," singer Matt Berninger said in the video above, after imploring Annie Clark not to step on his lines. "This is romantic." From there they went into the ballad, which featured atmospheric slide guitar and keyboards, with Berninger and Clark reading the lyrics from cheat sheets taped to the floor.
The duo even danced for about 10 seconds at the song's end, albeit with Berninger going outside his comfort zone as he tried a particular step. “I realized I don’t know how to spin somebody,” he said. "I gotta learn how to spin a lady."
Last October, coincidentally also in L.A., the National debuted another new song, "Roman Candle," which Setlist.fm says was one of four more unreleased songs (six in total) performed last night. The other titles -- all of which have been premiered on the group's current tour -- are "Find a Way," "Sometimes I Don't Think," "The Day I Die" and "The Lights." Presumably, these are the fruits of the "30 sketches of songs" that Berninger said the group had last year.
The National only have two dates left on their tour. They will play tonight at Berkeley, Calif.'s Greek Theatre tonight and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colo., on Sunday (July 31).
