Mike Will Made-It Claims Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd Came Up With Beyonce’s Formation Concept
Rae Sremmurd member Swae Lee created the concept for Beyoncé's hit single "Formation" according to Mike Will Made-It. The producer made this revelation in an extensive profile done by The New Yorker. In the piece, Mike Will recalls how Swae Lee came up with the idea during a ride to the 2014 Coachella Festival.
"So we’re in the middle of the desert and we’re just coming up — we just freestyle, you know?" Mike Will said. "Swae Lee said, 'O.K., ladies, now let’s get in formation.' And we put it on the VoiceNote. Swae Lee’s got so many voice notes that he doesn’t even record, but I’m like, 'Dog, we got to do that get in formation shit.' That could be a hard song for the ladies. Some woman-empowerment shit. Like, 'Ladies, let’s get in line, let’s not just fall for anything.' I’m seeing that vision."
The idea got to Beyoncé when Mike Will Made-It lucked into a meeting with her, Jay Z and LeBron James. Mike got a call from James' agent and joined the powerful trio at their mutual hotel. The "Formation" concept was brought up during this meeting.
"Bey was like, ‘Yo, I like that formation idea," Mike Will explained. "And I told her what I was thinking about the woman empowerment, and she was like, ‘Yeah I kinda like that idea.’ And she just left it like that."
As fans know, Swae Lee is credited as a writer on the Beyoncé single. But as Mike Will tells it, the Rae Sremmurd member deserves even more recognition for the hit song's creation.
