‘Masterminds,’ ‘Before I Wake’ and More Relativity Movies Finally Coming to Theaters
If titles like Masterminds and Before I Wake seem a bit familiar to you, that’s because you’ve read about them before. You may have even watched a trailer for one of them. Those films, along with The Disappointments Room and Kidnap, are finally seeing the light of day following Relativity’s emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which caused a delay in the release of several of their films that were originally meant to hit theaters long before now.
Per The Wrap, Relativity Media has now resolved its outstanding debts and is free to release titles that had previously stalled out due to the studio’s highly-publicized bankruptcy. First up is Before I Wake, the long-completed and continually-delayed horror film from Oculus director Mike Flanagan. Starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane and Room’s Jacob Tremblay, the film will hit theaters on September 9.
Next is Masterminds, a new comedy from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, starring Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig. Originally scheduled to hit theaters last summer, the film will now arrive on September 30.
The Disappointments Room is next on November 18. Directed by D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye), the thriller stars Kate Beckinsale and Lucas Till. Finally, the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap will hit theaters on December 2.
Relativity recently hit another bump with Netflix, when the streaming giant attempted to force the studio to honor its original streaming agreement — which means that two of the studio’s upcoming films would have debuted on Netflix before their new theatrical release dates. Via Variety, a hearing for the dispute has been set for May 19, though the federal judge handling the case says he’s inclined to side with Relativity on the matter.
