While Marvel and Sony are now playing in the same superhero sandbox, Marvel and Fox’s relationship remains a little less…cooperative. But there may be hope yet for an eventual collaboration of some kind, as the writers behind Deadpool have revealed that the two studios worked together to swap characters for their respective cinematic universes. You shouldn’t get your hopes up for the X-Men to appear in an Avengers film anytime soon, but it’s definitely optimistic news for Marvel fans.

In a recent interview with Collider, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that although he’s on good terms with executives at Fox, the business end of things hasn’t changed — which is to say that the studios aren’t anywhere close to plotting a big crossover like Sony and Marvel have with Spider-Man. That said, in The Playlist’s new Q&A with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the duo revealed that the competing studios made a deal to swap characters for two of their films:

Kurt Russell [‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new Guardians movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s powers.

If you’re a comic-book fan, you probably noticed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s powers were a bit different in the Deadpool movie than in the comics; in order to change her abilities and use the character’s name, Fox had to get approval from Marvel Studios. Fortunately for them, Marvel wanted to use Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — but Fox had the rights to that character, likely as part of their Fantastic Four package.

Seeing as Fox probably isn’t getting back in the Fantastic Four business anytime soon, the two studios were able to work out a deal that benefited both sides. It’s not a huge step toward a major crossover collaboration, but it’s certainly nice to see some progress. Now, if we could just get Fantastic Four back to Marvel Studios…
