One man was killed Wednesday evening after he apparently stepped in front of an Amtrak Downeaster train in downtown North Berwick, Maine.

An Amtrak spokesman said the commuter train was headed north from Boston to Brunswick with 88 passengers aboard.  Police confirmed that a North Berwick man was killed after being struck at the Lower Main Street railroad crossing at approximately 7:15 p.m.

According to Foster's Daily Democrat, the man had been distraught and posted his intentions to end his life on Facebook.

The tracks were closed for about 3 hours Wednesday evening

North Berwick police and Pan Am Railways, which owns the rail line used by the Downeaster, are investigating.
