Shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, a man with a full beard and wearing a hat and hoodie entered the Circle K on Military Street and demanded money, according to Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna.

The clerk, who was the only one on duty at the time, told police that the man took out his wallet and inadvertently showed a Maine Care Card or an EBT Card with his name on it.

The clerk gave the man cash from the register and seven cartons of Marlboro cigarettes valued at $630, Chief McKenna said.  No weapon was shown during the robbery, and the man fled on foot.

Maine State Police began tracking the suspect with a K-9 unit, but were initially unable to locate him.

The Circle K clerk was able to provide police with a last name from the I.D. card, and a few hours later they located the suspect at a residence on Military Street, about a mile from the store.

Police took 31-year-old Daniel Vose of Houlton into custody at about 11 a.m. Sunday.  A duffel bag found on the premises allegedly contained the stolen money and cigarettes. The clerk was able to identify Vose in a police line-up, McKenna said.

Vose remained in Aroostook County Jail on Monday, pending a court appearance.
