Three people were hospitalized Sunday after being assaulted at a home in southern Aroostook County, and the alleged assailant was seriously injured when police say he crashed a stolen car.

State Troopers responded to a New Limerick home Sunday morning after receiving a report that several individuals at the residence had been assaulted.  The investigation revealed that Dustin Smith (age not given) had allegedly assaulted three people at the residence, Trooper Chuck Michaud said in a press release Sunday afternoon.

Smith fled the scene before Troopers arrived, and a Maine State Police K-9 was called in to track him, Michaud said. Meanwhile, the suspect had allegedly stolen a car and crashed it on the Station Road in New Limerick, a short distance from the scene of the assaults.

Investigators say Smith crashed after failing to negotiate a sharp turn, and was ejected from the vehicle and pinned under it. Houlton Ambulance transported Smith to Houlton Regional Hospital and he was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries.

Smith will be facing multiple charges, including Aggravated Assault and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Michaud said.

The three people who were assaulted were admitted to the Houlton Hospital Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing.
