As 16 Little League teams from around the world begin World Series play today in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, what about Maine's history in this international event.

It is not a long history.

Only three teams from the Pine Tree State have played in Williamsport in the 69 years of the event.

2005 Westbrook All Stars: Eleven years ago, the kids from Westbrook won the state championship and then went on to win the New England Regional in Bristol, Connecticut. The team lost its first two games in Williamsport before winning a consolation bracket game.

1971 Augusta East All Stars: Forty-five years ago, Augusta East took part in what was then an 8-team LLWS. Augusta got shut out by Spain 5-0, then scored a 1-0 win over Kentucky before losing to Puerto Rico.

1951 Portland Suburban All Stars: Sixty-five years ago, the Portland Little Leaguers played in an 8-team single elimination LLWS and lost to Texas 3-1 after getting a first round bye.

NOTE: This year's Maine championship, Scarborough LL, went 1-2 in the New England Regional tourney. Rhode Island represents New England at the LLWS.
