There is something fishy about pet laws in Maine.

At least that appears to be the consensus of a woman from Hapswell who believes she should be able to keep an exotic pet fish inside her home, regardless of it being prohibited by state law.

Earlier this week, Georgette Curran presented her case to a judge by saying that Maine is the only state in the nation that makes it illegal to own a koi fish, which are native of Japan.

Last year, Curran filed a permit application that would enable her to keep the fish in her possession; however, that request was denied due to koi fish being deemed detrimental to the Maine fish populations if they ever made their way into the wild.

A formal decision into this matter is expected within the next few weeks.
