WalletHub.com has complied their list of the most energy expensive states in the country. In the United States, energy costs eats up between 5 and 22 percent of families' total after-tax income. WalletHub looked at the total monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. They based their rankings by constructing a special formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

Maine came in as the 7th most expensive state for energy costs.

The four metrics that they used for their rankings are:

1. Monthly Electricity Costs
2. Monthly Natural Gas Costs
3. Monthly Motor-Fuel Costs
4. Monthly Home Heating Oil Costs

Maine's average monthly electricity cost is $107 per month (40th)
Maine average monthly natural gas cost is $6 per month (49th)
Maine's average monthly motor-fuel costs is $110 per month (27th)
Maine's average monthly home-heating oil costs is $104 per month (2nd)

The total monthly energy costs for Maine is $327 per month, placing Maine as the 7th most energy expensive state.

It's clear that Maine's home heating oil costs are what placed Maine so high on the list.
