WalletHub.com has complied their list of the most energy expensive states in the country. In the United States, energy costs eats up between 5 and 22 percent of families' total after-tax income. WalletHub looked at the total monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. They based their rankings by constructing a special formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.
Maine came in as the 7th most expensive state for energy costs.
The four metrics that they used for their rankings are:
1. Monthly Electricity Costs
2. Monthly Natural Gas Costs
3. Monthly Motor-Fuel Costs
4. Monthly Home Heating Oil Costs
Maine's average monthly electricity cost is $107 per month (40th)
Maine average monthly natural gas cost is $6 per month (49th)
Maine's average monthly motor-fuel costs is $110 per month (27th)
Maine's average monthly home-heating oil costs is $104 per month (2nd)
The total monthly energy costs for Maine is $327 per month, placing Maine as the 7th most energy expensive state.
It's clear that Maine's home heating oil costs are what placed Maine so high on the list.
Connecticut is the most energy expensive state with a total monthly energy costs of $404 per month. Washington state has the lowest total energy costs per month with $218.
