Recently, California became the sixth largest economy in the world. This goes to show just how diverse economies can be from state to state.

Our friends at WalletHub.com recently did an analysis on all fifty states to include the D.C. area to determine the economic strengths and weaknesses of each one.

After checking 27 key indicators that included, but were not limited to GDP growth to startup activity to share of jobs in some of our high-tech industries, here is what they found.

The number one economy in the nation is Washington State, whose total score was 76.54. The state showed the highest rank in GDP and scored well on overall economic health and innovation potential.

However, these are the six states that had the worst state economies and Maine is, unfortunately, one of them.

If you just stick the fifty states, Maine ranks 45. Here's what that looks like.
