AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine is auctioning off 10 of its coveted moose permits for next fall's hunting season.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries And Wildlife says it will give the permits to applicants who submit the highest bids. The moose hunt happens in the fall every year and is limited to hunters who win a special lottery. The auction will provide another avenue to get a permit.

The state gave out 2,080 moose permits last year. The lottery typically attracts tens of thousands of applicants.

Maine officials say they will accept bids until Feb. 15. The wildlife department says each person awarded a permit must pay the bid amount and inform the state of where and when they intend to hunt.
