Authorities in Maine have charged a 12-year-old boy with three counts of arson associated with a fire earlier this week that obliterated several apartment complexes in the downtown area of Lewiston.

The juvenile suspect is in custody, according to reports. However, the boy’s identity has not been revealed because he is a minor. It is suspected that the boy will be eventually transported to a local juvenile detention center until his court appearance.

Lewiston police Chief Michael Bussiere says that it is too early to know whether the suspect will be prosecuted as an adult. “That’ll be a determination that the judge would have to make later on,” he said. “With his age it’s hard to say.”

So far, no other arrests have been made in connection with Monday’s fire, but Bussiere says that a team of investigators are currently working to determine if others were involved.

Arson is a Class A felony - if the suspect is tried as an adult, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
