The Lewiston Sun Journal is reporting that a lockdown has been lifted around 1pm at Lewiston High School and Martel Elementary School, after police searched for a firearm theft suspect.

The newspaper reports that Police put the schools on lockdown while they were investigating a firearm theft nearby, citing safety as a concern.

Detectives and officers of the Lewiston Police Department sought a suspect in the vicinity of Bates Street, and placed the nearby schools on lockdown to ensure the safety of students there. Once the police narrowed their search, the lockdowns were lifted.

Lt. David St. Pierre told the Sun Journal that despite the schools being on lockdown, the police did not have any reason to believe that the students or staff were ever in danger.
