2013: Lauryn Hill was released from prison on Oct. 4, 2013. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill songstress was released from a Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut after serving three months for tax evasion.

Lauryn Hill's tax problems have been documented in the media for almost ten years. It was first reported in 2012 that Hill owed $1.8 million in taxes from income earned from 2005 to 2007. This included income from her music, guest appearances, performances and movie roles and cameos. The New Jersey born singer argues that she stopped paying federal and state taxes when she felt it was necessary to withdraw from society. In June 2012, Ms. Lauryn stood before the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and pleaded guilty to the three charges of tax evasion.

More than a year had passed after the charge when in April of 2013, Hill had paid back only $50,000 of the $554,000 in restitution she owed and the judge sentenced her to three months in prison followed by three months house arrest. Lauryn entered the prison walls on July 8, 2013 and was released on Oct. 4 of the same year. Lauryn was technically released a week before her sentence was up due to good behavior.

During her three months of house arrest, Hill recorded new music. When her house arrest was over, she dropped the song "Consumerism" and gradually got back into touring. Now, four years later, Lauryn is back on her feet and touring this fall with Nas.
