John Boyega Teases Reunion With ‘Attack the Block’ Director
By now, you probably know that Attack the Block is a great movie; it even made our list of the 25 best sci-fi movies of the last 25 years. You also probably know that since starring in the film, John Boyega has become one of the fastest rising stars in Hollywood, helping set box office records in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and breathing life into Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim sequel. But did you know that Attack the Block writer-director Joe Cornish has not directed a film since his first collaboration with Boyega? There’s a situation in desperate need of some change.
The last time Cornish made movie news headlines was last October, when rumors circulated that that Fox was considering Cornish for the vacated director position in their oft-delayed Gambit movie. Back in 2013, Cornish was also considered by Paramount Pictures to direct the third Star Trek movie, a gig that ultimately went to Fast & Furious director Justin Lin. While either of these projects would certainly have benefited from his visual energy as a filmmaker, there’s no denying that part of what made Attack the Block such a fun film was its originality. If Cornish and Boyega have a new story in the works, then we’re going to say maybe this long wait was worth it after all.
(And if that “original story” just so happens to be a sequel to Attack the Block, well, we were probably due to revisit that list of the 25 best sci-fi movies anyways.)
