Jay Z Shades Phil Jackson During Tribute Speech to LeBron James
Last night, LeBron James and his family made their way to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he was being honored by Sport's Illustrated for Sportsperson of the Year. The Cavaliers player was introduced for his acceptance speech, and given his award, by his close and longtime friend, Jay Z. While it's rare these days to see Hov make a speech, he made sure to use the platform to not only tribute to his friend, but also throw some subliminal shade at Phil Jackson.
The NBA veteran coach recently made comments about LeBron, implying that he was a diva, and even referred to his business partners as a "posse"—which was perceived as racially-coded language.
During his speech, Hov didn't hold back in taking a jab at Jackson's comments, stating, "The son who honors and worships his mother Gloria. The friend who put his posse in position." Following the shot at Jackson, the audience then erupted in laughter, recognizing the shot taken at the NBA coach.
Continuing on with his tribute to James, the Brooklyn veteran rapper praised the baller by stating, "LeBron James has provided his friends with that opportunity. And as we witness their development, and if we're looking up at the scoreboard, very few businessmen are better than Maverick Carter, Rich Paul, Randy Mims, and all the rest of the posse behind the scenes that make it look like they're just hanging out." ]
