The Red Sox are confirming what many fans had feared - catcher Christian Vazquez needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and he will have that surgery today.

GM Ben Cherington says Vazquez injured the elbow back on March 13th while throwing out a Yankee runner trying to steal second base. At first, the injury appeared no big deal. An MRI conducted last Friday revealed ligament damage and after a second opinion called for the surgery, it will take place tomorrow and be peformed by Dr. James Andrews.

Vazquez will miss the entire season.

Ryan Hannigan will take over #1 duties with newly acquired Sandy Leon as backup. Highly touted prospect Blake Swihart will start the year at Pawtucket.
