An Island Falls man is behind bars after being charged with felony domestic violence assault.

Aroostook County Jail

The Aroostook County Sheriff's Office received a report of a domestic disturbance at a home on Route 2 in Island Falls around 8:30 Thursday morning, according to Sheriff Darrell Crandall.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of 39-year-old Leslie Phelps. Both Phelps and the victim live at the home and both parties were present, Crandall said. The charge is aggravated due to Phelps' prior convictions for domestic violence assault.

The victim, who will not be identified, sustained injuries but declined medical treatment.

Phelps was taken to the Aroostook County Jail where he will remain until he sees a judge for an initial court appearance. If convicted of the crime, he faces up to five years in prison.

Sheriff Crandall and Lieutenant Lawrence Goff assisted Deputy Alishia Ledger with the investigation and arrest.
