Human Remains Found on Small Island in Sheffield, N.B.

The RCMP and the Coroner’s office are investigating after human remains were found Saturday on a small island in Sheffield, New Brunswick.

The Oromocto RCMP was called shortly after 12:30 p.m, after the remains were discovered by some people walking on the island near McGowans Corner, according to Constable Nick Steeves.

Investigators used the RCMP boat to reach the island. RCMP forensic identification experts and Coroner Services were also called to the scene to assist with the investigation. Police say it appears the remains had been there for some time.

Officials are working on making a positive identification and determining the circumstances surrounding the person's death. An autopsy is scheduled for early in the week.
