The Town Council in Houlton were approached by citizens Monday night to voice their opinion that residents be allowed to vote on whether or not to allow pot cultivation.

Voters in Houlton want the opportunity to vote on whether to allow the retail and commercial cultivation and sales of recreational marijuana.

In February, council members unanimously voted to approve an ordinance allowing potential marijuana businesses in Houlton.

While the state works on improving the law, businesses are not allowed to open up shop until February of 2018. There are many towns in Maine that oppose this type of business and have imposed moratoriums to prevent it.

July 24 is slated as the date when the council will hold a public meeting on the matter.
