Hermit Burglar Captured in Maine Woods After Nearly Three Decades
The notorious “North Pond Hermit” who may be responsible for more than 1,000 break-ins in central Maine over the last 27 years remains behind bars after his capture last week.
State Police say 47-year-old Christopher Knight was arrested while stealing food from the Pine Tree Camp in the Belgrade Lakes region. Sgt. Terry Hughes of the Maine Warden Service said Knight tripped off surveillance equipment last Thursday and he was able to respond to capture him in the act.
The man had taken about $280 worth food from the camp, which provides programs for people with disabilities. Knight admitted to breaking into the Pine Tree Camp over 50 times since 1986.
Authorities also found the hidden campsite where they believe Knight has lived for years.
He is being held on $5,000 bail at the Kennebec County jail.
