A head-on collision on the TransCanada Highway in Edmundston late Monday afternoon sent three people to the hospital, one with critical injuries.

CIMT reports one of the cars was traveling in the wrong direction in the eastbound lanes and struck a sport utility vehicle around 5:30 p.m.

The RCMP and the Edmundston firefighters were called to the scene, as were several ambulances. Members of the Edmundston Police Force also assisted at the crash site near the Power Road exit.

The impact was so violent that firefighters had to completely pull the roof off a car to get the driver and her passenger out. Three people were transported to the hospital with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was disrupted on that section of the highway Monday evening.
