Happy Birthday, Iggy Azalea!
Today, June 7, is the birthday of Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, who now turns 28.
Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly in Sydney, Australia, the blonde bombshell fell in love with rap from an early age. Determined to make it in music, Iggy dropped out of school and saved money to move to the U.S. as a teenager, first bouncing around from Miami to Atlanta to L.A. Azalea caught the attention of the rap world in 2011 with the raunchy “PU$$Y” video off her 2011 mixtape, Ignorant Art. Iggy's tape featured YG, Problem and Chevy Jones. Iggy's buzz and popularity online earned her a spot as the first female rapper on the XXL Freshman cover in 2012 alongside the likes of Macklemore, Kid Ink, French Montana and more.
Though she had marginal hits in 2013, Iggy bust onto the Billboard charts with her 2014 single "Fancy" featuring Charli XCX. The infectious girl anthem scored Azalea her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs charts and served as the lead single off her debut album, The New Classic, released in April of that year. Though Iggy's fan base, known as Azaleans, remain steadfast and loyal to her, the Aussie import has amassed a great deal of pushback in the industry as a white female. Her adversaries have been vocal about her being an impostor and Iggy has admitted to suffering mental breakdowns under the pressure. But still, she has stayed true to her passion and, despite label drama, she's still putting out dope new music—see her Quavo-assisted single, "Savior"— and looking toward glowing up even more. Salute.
Happy Birthday, Iggy!
