I spoke with Presque Isle Parks & Rec Director, Chris Beaulieu, and he said that it's official, the pool is closing because of the poor condition it is in. Beaulieu along with his staff are working on a plan to find a way to continue swimming lessons for this summer. He hopes something can be worked out between the PI Rec Department and The University of Maine at Presque Isle. Using the Presque Isle indoor pool isn't an option due to lack of space.

Beaulieu estimates the cost of constructing a new outdoor pool would run about $1.5 million. He went on to say that for the past 7 or 8 years he's been trying to get the funding to fix the pool and that he knew it needed a touch of modernization, but no one would fund the project.

The Presque Isle Rec Department is still registering kids for summer activities. Registration closes this Thursday, June 6th.
