Four People Injured in Maine Snowmobile Crashes

Four snowmobiles crashed Friday morning northwest of Millinocket, sending four people to the hospital with injuries.

Two snowmobiles crashed - almost head-on – where trails ITS 85 & ITS 86 connect in Solidertown Township around 11 a.m. Two other snowmobile riders hit trees to avoid the first crash, said Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.

46-year-old Michael Byram of Hermon and a 15-year-old male from Massachusetts were involved in the first accident. Byram suffered multiple injuries with a broken collar bone & shoulder, and had sings of hypothermia. The 15-year-old broke his arm and had a possible concussion, said MacDonald.

Two other snowmobiles were riding behind the 15-year-old when they crashed into trees to avoid the first collision.

49-year-old Robert Buzak had minor injuries while his 14-year-old son had a broken shoulder and possible injuries to his back, MacDonald said. They were part of the 15-year-old’s group from Massachusetts.

Maine Game Wardens said speed was most likely a factor, and believe alcohol was not. Everyone was wearing a helmet, according to officials.

MacDonald said rescue crews had to travel over 10 miles to the scene. It took them about an hour and a half.

The injured were taken to Millinocket Hospital. The investigation is ongoing.
